The Creative Process

When I start on a blank canvas, I first line up paints to see which ones are speaking to me on that particular day. I rarely begin a canvas with all the colors in mind -- it seems to me as though they prefer to choose themselves. Once they are mixed (in various ways depending upon how I want them to react with each other), I might use a variety of application techniques including pouring, brushing, scraping, splattering, tipping, and spinning. At this point I really let the painting do the talking-- it takes me where it wants to go, and I follow. Upon the piece drying completely, I finish it with a sprayed or poured clear topcoat for sealing. After that, framing is chosen and photos of the finished product are taken. The final painting might be seen very differently by each individual person observing it, and that is my hope………
